Overview
Clinical papers emerging from psychoanalytic practice, developing toward a systematic clinical theory grounded in Laplanche's model of translation. The work follows a trajectory from self psychology through Green's theory of the negative to Laplanche's general theory of seduction — not as a sequence of abandoned frameworks but as an accumulation of clinical perspectives that now converge on a central question: under what conditions does translation become compulsive rather than free, and what does this mean for how we understand pathology, technique, and cure?
Theoretical Trajectory
The clinical work traces a developmental arc in theoretical orientation:
Self Psychology (2020–2025)
Clinical thinking grounded in self-psychological frameworks from the beginning of practice: selfobject failure, narcissistic vulnerability, the relational and social unconscious in Chinese contexts. Published papers from this phase include "Deprivation and Disruption" and "Gaming the Unconscious."
The Negative (2025–2026)
"Self-Hollowing" marks the turn — combining self psychology with Green's concept of the negative. The clinical object shifts from what the self lacks to what the self does with absence.
Laplanche (2026–)
"The Defensive Production of Certainty" proposes compulsive translation as an independent clinical dimension — a spectrum from the urgent, defensive conversion of enigma into certainty to the capacity to tolerate the other's opacity. This paper opens a research programme developing Laplanche's metapsychology into a systematic clinical theory.

Research Programme
Laplanche's general theory of seduction places translation at the origin of psychic life, but his clinical theory remains underdeveloped. No one has systematically asked: when translation becomes not merely inevitable but compulsive, what is happening clinically? What defensive function does the compulsiveness serve? What conditions produce it? And what does it mean for technique?
This programme investigates these questions through four layers:
Four-Layer Structure
1. Conditions of translation — when is translation compulsive, when is it free? (Paper 1 complete)
2. Theoretical dialogue — compulsive translation in conversation with Ferenczi, self psychology, Green, Bion, relational psychoanalysis
3. Clinical technique — Laplanchian listening, interpretation, enigma concentration as a technical variable
4. Clinical system — a theory of pathology (compulsive translation), treatment (modifying conditions), and cure (loosening)
